Pay Sank
Wednesday, 25 July 2007

Once again the pair found themselves in Ingleton chippy enjoying sausage and chips prior to another excellent evening trip! Todays trip was Pay Sank, a relatively new pothole which drops into the bottom of Grange Rigg Pot and was opened up by the BPC.

Arriving at the Craven tacklestore in Horton I then had to break-down the article in descent (this was the only info we had) in order to get possible rope lengths etc etc, so with 5 ropes packed and an assortment of rigging gear we set off round to clapham, and a 40min walk later in pleasant weather we were at the entrance.

The entrance pitch was more of a climb down scaffolding really, but a handline was installed just in case. A short crawl at the bottom of this led to a reasonable sized chamber, and a descent down boulders led to another scaffolded climb to a streamway. This soon led to two more well-watered climbs, separated by a short tube taking the stream. This made for some unorthodox rigging as only had one rope for both climbs (as a handline).
Then, a superb bit of streamway to a fine 21m pitch into Pinnacle Hall, followed by more streamway and two more short well-watered pitches. The water then disappeared, and the way on was following a large pipe to the right, and then left and down a climb. Left at the bottom of this led to a couple of crawls to a perched sump whilst right was a crawl to a climb down to the sump in Grange Rigg Pot – a place I recognised from my trip with Chris down Grange Rigg last year.

Then back out with tom de-rigging and posing for photos…..I’m sorry tom, If I wasn’t faffing with my camera we would have been out in time for the pub!!

The ascent went smoothly and we arrived at the surface after an excellent 2 – 2.5hr trip. A tedious walk down long lane with aching shins from a run the other night soon brought us back to Clapham.
Superb evening trip! Would make a nice exchange with Grange Rigg!
